Wilgenlei Heat Cooperative accelerates energy transition

Bell pepper growers Roy Persoon, Wouter van den Bosch (pictured), and Maikel van den Berg are committed to an open and sustainable heat network for the Wilgenlei horticultural area.

Last year, entrepreneurs Maikel van de Berg, Roy Persoon, and Wouter van den Bosch met as many as 40 times. They have been discussing a heat network for the Wilgenlei horticultural area since 2017; never before have they met so frequently. This is because there has never been as much uncertainty in the energy sector as there is now.

Their plan involves making the horticultural area more sustainable through a heat project that differs from the traditional model; it features multiple heat providers (residual heat, geothermal energy, and biomass). Growers will be able to switch between these providers. Discussions with Eneco have also been ongoing for the past 1.5 years.
