Data in greenhouse horticulture

Lansingerland – At Kwekerij Van Den Bosch in Bleiswijk, data and mathematics are utilized to improve blackberry cultivation and enable year-round growth. By using algorithms and sensors, they can accurately monitor crops and fruit throughout the entire greenhouse and adjust the crop strategy where necessary.

“We noticed immediately when we started with blackberries that winter production was quite challenging,” says Wouter van den Bosch. “As an extension of the research we are conducting, we are looking very closely at data.”

Sensors are installed in the greenhouse to provide data. The data obtained helps, on one hand, to better understand which strategy to deploy and when, so that the plant can produce better and more; on the other hand, this strategy can be executed automatically by the greenhouse systems based on algorithms.

The Lean management principle originated in Japanese car factories and is a method for streamlining production processes very efficiently, which is also important. Data alone is not enough to grow a crop. But could all that data also reveal too many trade secrets? In this episode of De Achtertuin, Wouter van den Bosch explains everything about data in greenhouse horticulture.
