Help build the high-tech blackberry cultivation of Bosch Growers

Are you already working as a grower or cultivation assistant and ready for the next step? Or do you have a horticultural background and want to be trained as an independent grower?

Bosch Growers is looking for a Grower / Aspiring Soft Fruit Grower for our blackberry cultivation in Berkel en Rodenrijs. We are explicitly open to different levels of knowledge and experience. Both experienced growers and ambitious starters are welcome.

You will work in a modern high-tech greenhouse where plant knowledge, technology, and data come together. We work with assimilation lighting, extensive climate and plant sensors, a climate computer, automated irrigation and fertilization, and misting for active climate control.

You will work daily among the crop, but also use measurements and data to make increasingly better cultivation decisions.

About Bosch Growers

Bosch Growers is an internationally active family business in greenhouse horticulture. The company was founded in 1854 and is now led by the sixth generation.

From our locations in Bleiswijk and Berkel en Rodenrijs, we grow bell peppers and blackberries and develop our own plant propagation. Additionally, we are active in Somerset, Kentucky, with a large-scale soft fruit company.

We combine the down-to-earth nature and commitment of a Dutch family business with the ambition and opportunities of an international organization. For us, innovation is not an end in itself, but a way to further improve the cultivation, the organization, and ourselves every day.

Lines of communication are short, and employees are given plenty of room to take initiative, build responsibility, and contribute directly to the results.

What will you be doing?

Depending on your knowledge and experience, you will work under supervision or take independent responsibility for parts of the blackberry cultivation.

Your activities will include:

  • Daily assessment of the crop, growth, plant load, production, and fruit quality.
  • Performing plant measurements and carefully recording the results.
  • Analyzing crop, climate, irrigation, and production data.
  • Supporting or independently executing climate, irrigation, and fertilization strategies.
  • Working with the climate computer, assimilation lighting, sensors, irrigation, and misting.
  • Identifying deviations in the crop and responding to them in a timely manner.
  • Collaborating with the cultivation specialist and participating in cultivation meetings.
  • Coordinating with the IPM team regarding pests, diseases, and biological crop protection.
  • Setting up, executing, and evaluating practical trials.
  • Participating in trials involving varieties, substrate, fertilization, plant load, pruning, and cultivation strategies.
  • Translating research results into practical improvements in the greenhouse.
  • Drafting and improving work plans, cultivation procedures, and cultivation manuals.
  • Monitoring that crop activities are carried out on time and according to the desired quality standard.
  • Contributing to the further development of our own propagation of blackberry plants.

After a good training period, you will participate in weekend and on-call shifts approximately once every four to five weeks.

Who are we looking for?

You are curious about the plant as well as the technology and data behind the cultivation. You don’t just want to know what is happening, but especially understand why it is happening.

You recognize yourself in the following traits:

  • Eager to learn: you want to develop yourself and build new cultivation knowledge.
  • Analytical: you use observations, measurements, and data to reach better decisions.
  • Practical: you enjoy working in the greenhouse and being among the crop.
  • Proactive: you spot deviations and work that needs to be done and take initiative yourself.
  • Accurate: you carry out measurements and trials carefully and consistently.
  • Responsible: you fulfill agreements and do not leave problems unresolved.
  • Collaboration-oriented: you can communicate effectively with cultivation staff, specialists, managers, and directors.
  • Ambitious: you want to grow and take on more and more responsibility for the cultivation.

What do you bring?

  • MBO-4 or HBO level of working and thinking, preferably in the direction of horticulture, agriculture, plant sciences, or similar.
  • Experience in greenhouse horticulture is an advantage, but not a requirement for a motivated starter.
  • Interest in climate control, irrigation, fertilization, sensor technology, and data.
  • Basic knowledge of pests, diseases, and crop protection is a plus.
  • Experience with a climate computer, such as Priva, is a plus.
  • A pesticide application license, or the willingness to obtain one.
  • Good communication skills.
  • You can communicate well in Dutch or English. If Dutch is not yet your first language, you are willing to learn it.
  • You are willing to participate in weekend and on-call shifts after your training period.

If you do not yet meet all the points but have a strong interest in horticulture and the ambition to become a grower, we explicitly invite you to apply.

What do we offer?

  • A versatile position within a modern and internationally active family business.
  • An employment contract of 36 – 42 hours per week.
  • A gross monthly salary of €2,750 to €4,500 on a full-time basis, depending on knowledge, experience, and independence.
  • Terms of employment according to the Collective Labor Agreement (CAO) for Greenhouse Horticulture.
  • A concrete development path toward an independent role as a grower.
  • Guidance from experienced cultivation specialists.
  • Plenty of room for personal development and professional training.
  • The opportunity to obtain a pesticide application license and other relevant certificates.
  • Working with modern cultivation technology, sensors, and data.
  • Room to participate in practical research and innovative cultivation trials.
  • Short lines of communication and direct contact with management.
  • Plenty of room for own initiative and responsibility.
  • An informal and professional working atmosphere.
  • The opportunity to help build the expansion and further professionalization of our blackberry cultivation.
